Aneroid barometer, compensated for temperature, made by T. Wheeler Scientific Instruments Ltd, London, UK, 1940. Meteorological Office no. 11450/50. Scale marked in inches and millibars.
Aneroid barometers measure atmospheric pressure. When the pressure of the atmosphere on the capsule – a hollow component contained inside the case – decreases, a connected spring relaxes and moves an arm connected by levers and springs to the instrument’s pointer. This model was designed to be portable, for use in locations where mercury station barometers were impractical.
