Tropical sunshine recorder Mk IIIA, Campbell-Stokes type, MO [Meteorological Office] serial no.479/59, made by Casella, London, 1959.
This device records the duration of visible sunshine. The glass orb focusses the Sun's rays and burns a line onto a recording card. Each card is marked with hourly intervals and can record up to a day of sunshine. It is the 'Tropical' version, designed for latitudes between 0 and 45 degrees North or South.
This type of recorder was invented by John Francis Campbell in 1853 and modified in 1879 by Sir George Gabriel Stokes, leading to the design name 'Campbell-Stokes. This particular design is manufactured to the specifications of the British Meteorological Office.
