Pilot's appliance for holding the joy-stick, England, 1942-1943
- maker:
- Hugh Steeper
Aviator's appliance for holding the 'joy-stick' (This was owned by the late Air Vice-Marshal Sir Augustus Walker who flew Vulcans). Made by Steeper c.1942.
This specially designed appliance was used by Sir Augustus Walker (1912-1986), a pilot and squadron leader in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. After an airfield accident in December 1942, Walker had his right arm amputated above the elbow. Just five months later, Walker was flying planes again with his artificial arm strapped to this device, allowing him to control the joystick and fly his plane.
