Charles Chevalier (1804–59) was an optician and scientific instrument maker, who constructed early daguerreotype cameras. In the 1840s he designed this camera, which features a modified lens. This allowed a photographer to adjust the speed and focal length, through adding different aperture discs and extension tubes. Chevalier’s camera was also designed to be portable, easily folding down for travel.
