Dark slide plate holder, wooden, for a whole plate folding daguerreotype camera, by Charles Chevalier.

Charles Chevalier (1804–59) was an optician and scientific instrument maker, who constructed early daguerreotype cameras. This dark slide plate holder comes from a portable folding camera designed by Chevalier in the 1840s.
