Catoptric cylinder with sheath and cap and fourteen pictures. Anamorphic pictures were common in the eighteenth century. In this case a recognisable image is revealed by looking in the cylindrical mirror. Once belonged to Stephen Demainbray and used by him in his lectures on natural philosophy.Demainbray worked as superintendent at the King's observatory at Kew from 1768 and his collection of instruments and apparatus was absorbed into the King's own collection.

Catoptric cylinder with sheath and cap and fourteen coloured pictures, unknown maker, before 1753. Once belonged to Stephen Demainbray.


Anamorphic pictures were common in the eighteenth century. In this case a recognisable image is revealed by looking in the cylindrical mirror. This set once belonged to Stephen Demainbray and was used by him in his lectures on natural philosophy.Demainbray worked as superintendent at the King's observatory at Kew from 1768 and his collection of instruments and apparatus was absorbed into the King's own collection.
