In the early 1900s, electricity companies in Britain and elsewhere encouraged people to use more electricity. They promoted its convenience over coal and gas, which made homes dirty.
Hundreds of new electrical appliances appeared. Many were short-lived, but others – such as irons and kettles – became increasingly popular. Early consumers had to learn new skills and modify their habits in order to use their electrical devices.
