Early 'bull's-eye lantern' pattern magic lantern, orginally with polychrome colouring now mostly gone. Candle holder, with hinged front with lens tube. For 95mm wide slides. Unknown maker, about 1780 to 1820.

This large Magic Lantern is made of tin and could have contained a candle illuminant. Such lanterns were used in Phantasmagoria shows where 'magical' appearances of ghosts and phantoms were projected onto screens and smoke.
