Manuscript in school exercise book, paper with card covers, James Biott, Trip to London, August 1862. Record of the Stockton & Darlington Railway's Artizans' Trip from Shildon and Darlington to London, to see the International Exhibition. The trip departed on 20 August. Henry Pease offered a prize for the best essay, and this manuscript is presumably Biott's entry. Biott was a joiner and surveyor from New Shildon. The essay consists of descriptions of the journey to London (including a passage on York), Woolwich, the British Museum, St. Paul's Cathedral, St. Stephen's New Church Paddington, and over 14 pages on the animals in the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens, followed by brief entries on a few other buildings. Illustrated with drawings of the Thames Tunnel entrance, Holford House, middle arch of New London Bridge, the General Post Office, and Somerset House. Last entry is dated Thursday 25th August. Loose in the front is a handbill announcing the trip and competition and 3 passes to the Arcades at the exhibition. [It is assumed that Biott did not win a prize, as the competition required observations on the exhibits at the International Exhibition.]
