Papers describing E.A. Langridge's appointment as an apprentice in the London & South Western Railway's Chief Mechanical Engineer's department and his early career. Comprises of circa 6 items, including correspondence, a script for a talk on life as an apprentice and a programme for an entertainment event for Eastleigh railwaymen.
These papers provide context for the career of Eric Arthur Langridge, a locomotive designer, principally for the Midland Railway and London, Midland & Scottish Railway, who served at the coalface of the development of locomotive technology throughout his career, specialising in boilers. He was a talented apprentice and got an early rare opportunity for an apprentice to work in the Eastleigh drawing office filling in for railway workers who had joined the armed forces during the First World War. It was there that he found his vocation amongst the slide rules and drafting tables. On completion of his apprenticeship he left to join the Midland Railway in 1920, where he would spend the next 39 years of his career. Under W A Stanier, Langridge worked on the Jubilee, Princess and Duchess classes.
