A photograph entitled 'Fort Ada, Alexandria', taken by an unknown photographer in November 1882.
The photograph shows a damaged gun battery on the walls of Fort Adda (or Ada) in Alexandria, Egypt. Fort Adda was one of several forts defending Alexandria harbour. It was the first fort attacked by the British fleet on 11 July 1882 during the Bombardment of Alexandria in the Anglo-Egyptian War (1882).
The photograph is taken from an album entitled 'Algiers Egypt &c 1882-3'. The album was owned by Brigadier General Herbert Conyers Surtees (1858-1933), Antiquarian and MP for Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. It contains a mixture of photographs of North African tourist subjects and views of Egyptian battlefields.
