A dissolving magic lantern slide showing a waterfall by day, by an unknown maker, 19th century.
The waterfall is possibly Niagara Falls. Dissolving slides were generally shown using magic lanterns with two or three lenses. As one lens showing one slide was covered, another showing a second slide registered with the first was uncovered to produce a dissolve or transformation between the two projected images. The other slide in the pair shows the waterfall by night.
