Spiral bound notebook labelled 'Ideas' belonging to James Lovelock, c. 2000. At the back is a section entitled 'Some thoughts on 20th century science'. Illegible in places. Some of the notes are possibly draft letters. One page is torn in half. Manuscript; pen and pencil. Includes a loose insert: printed out email requesting an interview for Danish TV, 2001 - email is annotated. Dimensions include spiral binding, opens horizontally 360 mm (w).
James Lovelock worked in a number of different scientific disciplines for over 70 years, giving him a broad perspective on how science has progressed and changed during the 1900s. In the reflections on twentieth century science within this notebook, he mused on whether science moved from being a vocation based on passion to a career based on money. He also pondered the relative success of British science in the last century.
