Illustrated pamphlet advertising various bicycles. Ralpho Cycle Co. Altrincham, 1899.

Includes images and descriptions of Ralpho bikes including the 'Ladies Roadster' a Bicycles designed for women allowing for long skirts. Women’s bikes were built for slow leisure riding rather than efficient movement. An aerodynamic posture would be impossible to adopt as the handlebar position was so upright. Another bike in this book is a tandem designed to have the woman at the front and the man at the back. Incredibly the steering and breaking was controlled only by way of two rods running from the front forks to the handlebars, and the man at the back: quite literally backseat driving.
