The notebook contains some fascinating observations on what was happening in the engineering world. The notebook was written at the time Beyer had started work for Sharp, Roberts and Company. In it he writes about the various foundries and mills he visits including Stephenson’s works over in York to look at his patent locomotive and Whitworth’s foundry and his observations about Whitworth's early machine tools.
