Paddlewheel used by James Joule in c.1860 for the more accurate determination of the mechanical equivalent of heat. The paddle was turned and Joule than calculated the force required to stop it moving.

Although used and commisioned by Joule the maker of this item remains uncredited. Other items equipment Joule used was made by Dancer and E.T Bellhouse & Co, Eagle Foundry, Manchester.
