Tandem compound condensing engine, made by J. & W. McNaught, Rochdale, 1907 and used at Firgrove Mill in Rochdale. Corliss valve (high pressure cylinder) and slide valve (low pressure cylinder), speed 80 rpm, power output 500 horsepower.
From 1907 to 1970, this engine drove the R. Barnes & Co. Firgrove Mill in Rochdale, which produced flannelette, also known as brushed cotton, a soft and fluffy cotton fabric most often used for bedding and children's clothes.
