Tandem compound condensing engine, made by J. & W. McNaught, Rochdale, 1907. Corliss valve (high pressure cylinder) and slide valve (low pressure cylinder), speed 80 rpm, power output 500 horsepower.
From 1907 to 1970, this engine drove the R. Barnes & Co. Firgrove Mill in Rochdale, which produced flannelette, also known as brushed cotton, a soft and fluffy cotton fabric most often used for bedding and children's clothes.
