Bailey & Waddington Davy lamp
Miner's safety Davy lamp made by Bailey & Waddington, Burnley, design patented 1873.
Thomas Thompson Bailey, Padiham & Henry Waddington, Burnley secured patent #293 on 25 Jan 1873 for the lock on this lamp. This invention was intended to prevent the possibility of a miner opening his “Davy lamp” without detection, and consists principally in the use of a seal in an enclosed case or box fitted to the lamp, and so arranged that it is impossible for the miner to unscrew the top of his lamp without breaking the seal. This is the only lamp of this type known to survive.
