One photograph, a portrait of a young male volunteer for the Ashington Colliery, training scheme for pit boys by James Jarche, 27 May 1942. Caption on back reads: 'At Ashington Colliery, Northumberland, a year-old training schome for pit-boys has met with great success. They are given intensive instruction in such things as mining machinery, underground working methods, safety lamps, ventilation, first aid, mining history, and even citizenship. In the pit is a special training gallery. The instructors are miners with years of experience at the coal face. These pictures show (top) a lecture in timbering, (right) one of the pupils, and (below) a lesson in the training gallery. Over 200 boys have already passed'. Gelatin silver print.
