Box of Four Eyeballs and latex eyelid
A set of four eyeballs, made by Curry & Paxton Ltd., a London-based glass eye manufacturer, and a latex eyelid, created by Phil Leakey (1908-1992), in 1957 for usein creating the Creature, played by Christopher Lee (1922-2015), in the film 'The Curse of Frankenstein' (1957).
Roy Ashton and Phil Leakey worked for Hammer Films during the 1950s and 1960s. They were pioneers of special effects make-up - using cosmetics and prosthetics to transform an actor's appearance. Hammer Film Productions was founded in 1947. In 1957, it released the first colour gothic horror film, The Curse Of Frankenstein, which was an enormous success and the first time Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing performed together (under the direction of Terence Fisher, Hammer’s main director).
These eyeballs and eyelids were used as part of teh make up effects for Frankenstein's Creature. Leakey had to design a whole new look for the Creature as due to copyright reasons he was not able to copy the 'classic' Creature design from the 1931 film made by Universal Studios.
