Watch by John Nicasius

Watch by John Nicasius, London, c.1630. Long octagonal crystal case and cover, the crystals set in gilt frames engraved with flowers and leaf pattern. Gilt dial plate, engraved with flowers and foliage, with a small silver chapter ring, and steel hand with long tail. Case and dial probably 19th century. Movement with verge escapement, pinned on balance cock, ratchet wheel set-up, and a train of three wheels. Signed ‘Nicasius, London’. Presented to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers by Charles E. John Nicasius became a freeman of the Clockmakers’ in 1632 and Master in 1653 and 1655. He worked in Fleet Street and had strong connections with Holland. His notoriously fiery temper caused his suspension from the Court in 1679 until he apologised for his behaviour – something he never did.
