Gold quarter-repeating watch by Abraham-Louis Breguet, Paris, France, c. 1795. Gold case stamped 5522 on the inside, and on the back, a later engraving 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' and 'To Major Codd. 24 Oct. 1816'. White enamel dial, signed 'Breguet' in cursive lettering, with aperture for dial winding. Breguet-style looped hands. Full-plate movement with repeating work, and with a type of escapement used by Breguet on only a very few of his earliest watches. The impulse 'fork' is in the form of a complete loop encircling the balance-staff. The actions of impulse and locking take place on the far side from the escape-wheel. Signed on the dust-cap 'Breguet no 125' and on the brass rim round the dial 'Breguet No. 125 9/4. Clockmakers' Museum No. 457
