Spring driven table clock with alarm work and quarter chiming on 5 bells by Fromanteel & Clarke, Amsterdam, c.1695. Oak case veneered in tortoiseshell, with brass mounts and basket top. 7 inch gilt-brass square dial with matted centre, engraved scrollwork around the calendar aperture, foliage engraved around the edges and ‘Fromanteel’ engraved in a cartouche. Applied silvered chapter ring signed ‘Fromanteel & Clarke’. Alarm-setting disc to centre. At the four corners are subsidiary dials; the upper left for pendulum regulation and the upper right for strike/silent. The lower dials lock the pendulum for when the clock is transported. Fusee movement of 8 day duration with verge escapement and short pendulum, a train of three wheels, and chiming on 5 bells. Backplate engraved with birds and flowers and signed ‘Fromanteel’. The pendulum lock consists of two forked levers which rotate to embrace the pendulum in its centre position. Clockmakers' Museum No. 700
