Russell bookbinding press, submitted as an example of prior art during patent litigation concerning the ‘Workmate’ combined vice and workbench, UK, 1977.
This press helped to prove conclusively the validity of the Workmate patents, being found to be a previously unknown example of prior art, but one which could not be used as a workbench though it had all the ‘structural integers’ of the Workmate patent. But for the inclusion of the word ‘workbench’ in the Workmate patents, they would have not been found to be legally watertight.
