Made:
1790-1810 in England

Framed oil on canvas portrait of Richard Rippon (1767-1835).

Richard Rippon was a watchmaker and cousin of Edward John Dent, maker of the clock in the Elizabeth Tower, known as 'Big Ben'. E J Dent originally was apprenticed as a tallow chandler, but came to live with Rippon in around 1804, where he developed an interest in watchmaking. E J Dent became a journeyman to Rippon and stayed working at Rippon's business address until c.1830. Rippon died in 1835 and Dent married Rippon's widow Elizabeth (1843). Her children by Rippon, Frederick-William and Richard adopted Dent's surname and continued the business after Dent's death in 1853.
