Breydon viaduct and swing bridge drawings

Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway

Three drawings produced by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway's Melton Constable Works of Breydon viaduct and swing bridge in Yarmouth for the Lowestoft Junction Railway showing plans and sections.

The Lowestoft Junction Railway was completed in 1903 to link the towns of Yarmouth and Lowestoft on the East Anglian coast. In Yarmouth, the railway crossed the river Yare by means of the Breydon viaduct. A key feature of the viaduct shown in these drawings was the swing bridge which would open to allow passage for boats navigating the river that were too tall to fit under the structure. The railway was closed in 1953 and the bridge demolished in 1962.

There were numerous railway swing bridges in East Anglia where the flat terrain made it difficult for railways companies to build high bridges above rivers with enough clearance for boats to pass unimpeded. Several are still in operation.
