Tyne Dock located in South Shields was constructed by the North Eastern Railway under the Tyne Improvement Act and opened in 1859 after three years of construction. The lock gates were designed by Robert Stephenson, that were operated by machinery designed by William Armstrong. The dock was primarily used for the transport of coal. This map shows the extensive system of railways that served the dock by 1895. In 1938 Tyne Dock was acquired by the Tyneside Improvement Commission.
