Manufacturing insulated concrete formwork (ICF) generates a lot of carbon emissions, but ICF buildings are well insulated, requiring less energy to heat or cool. ICF is made by pouring concrete into expanded polystyrene panels with plastic ties and steel braces for stability. ICF’s high stability has encouraged its use in areas increasingly prone to extreme storm events as the climate changes.
