Gold repoussé half-quarter repeating watch by John Pepys

Made:
c.1742 in London

Pair-cased gold half-quarter repeating watch by John Pepys. Outer case in gold or silver gilt repoussé, with pierced and engraved border. Inner gold case pierced and engraved, and hallmarked for 1742, with a makers mark probably for Daniel Aveline. White enamel dial and (later) gold hands. Cylinder escapement with diamond endstone. Backplate signed 'Jno Pepys London 3516'.

John Pepys the younger was apprenticed in 1708 to Thomas Gibbs. He was subsequently turned over to his father, John, also a clockmaker. He gained his Freedom of the Clockmakers' Company in 1715 and went on to serve as its Master in 1739. The casemaker's mark for this watch suggest that it was made by Daniel Aveline (d.1771) , a watch casemaker based in Seven Dials, Covent Garden. Aveline also served as Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1771, the year in which he died.

Gifted to the Clockmakers' Museum from the estate of Jack Lewen (d.2023). Clockmakers' Museum No. 1532
