Coin, copper, 35mm diameter. Regal penny, 1797. 'cartwheel'. Issuer The Royal Mint, 1797, Regal penny. Obverse Bust of George III facing right: ‘Georgius III. D. G. Rex’. Reverse Britannia seated, a small ship to the left of her feet, one hand holding an olive branch (obscured on this coin) the other holding a trident, a Union shield beneath her: ‘Britannia 1797’. Notes The design of the Britannia, better seen on the twopenny piece (1977-381/145), shows her to be relaxed and feminine in appearance. On later issues she became increasingly rigid, presumably a minor reflection of the Victorians themselves.
