Smith Kline and French introduced Dexedrine, to treat psychiatric patients, and suffering from depression, fatigue, listlessness and narcolepsy. Launched in 1952, it was the first medicine to be supplied in a sustained-release capsule known as a Spansule. Thyroid produces an increase in the rate of general which is manifested by as an increase in oxygen consumption and in excretion of nitrogen, calcium and water in the urine and a decrease in body weight. Used in the treatment of obesity, but it is inadvisable unless this is associated with Dexamphetamine sulphate, an anorectic drug, was used as an adjunct in the treatment of obesity. Although it doesn't increase the basal metabolism or nitrogen excretion it enables the patient to accept a restricted diet more readily.
