Gelatin silver print entitled 'Mr and Mrs M and their four children lived in a council owned house in Vincent Crescent, Balsall Heath. Apart from the poor state of the property:- no bathroom, no hot water, outside lavatory, inside walls running with damp - these children were sleeping in the middle of winter, on two sodden seat cushions covered by a couple of old 'macs', there was no heating in the room, the snow lay thick outside and the windows were broken'. Gelatin silver print entitled 'Mr & Mrs Phillips lived with their three children (4,3 & 1 1/2 years) in a council owned slum house. A few years before Mr Phillips was earning £30.40 as a spot welder and they lived in a new council house. Then Mr P began going blind (a danger of his trade) he lost his job, fell into rent arrears was evicted into this sub-standard property-no bath, no hot water, outdoor lavatory. Gelatin silver print entitled 'Betty Magee (11) lived with her mother and two brothers in slum council house. There was no bath, no hot water. The outdoor lavatory flushes onto the floor unless you kept firm hold on the pipe at the back of the pan. They paid £3.45p a fortnight in rent.
