One photograph of an instructor showing trainee miners how to work lamps titled 'Training boys and men to become coal miners'. Caption on back reads: 'Unline the old days when boys were sent down coal mines at a very tender age and completely devoid of experience, and had to learn the trade by experience and the mistages they made. To-day they receive a thorough course of instruction before being allowed to work in the pit. At the Kent Country Training Centre (which is now run by the Ministry of Fuel and Power) at Betteshanger Colliery, Deal Kent. Boys have to go through a two monty course, in which they are taught all aspects of coal mining, including geology. Men who are new to coal mining, and there are a lot coming from the services, have to take a course of four weeks before taking over any duties. As well as this a Ministry of Fuel and Power instructor visits the mine periodically and gives a course of instruction to senior colliery officials on TWI (Trade within Industry). All this shows that coal mining is now being treated as a scientific and specialist job, in which only thoroughly experienced men can work'.
