A letter from Robert, Stephenson, Liverpool, dated 18th June 1824 and addressed to his stepmother, Mrs George Stephenson, Forth Street, Newcastle Tyne. This letter is in response to one written to him by both his stepmother and his father. He advises his father to focus on his work with the 'Liverpool Railroad' and hopes he will find some one to take charge of 'the Factory'. Some of the letter has been damaged making two of the paragraphs illegible.

My Dear Mother
[first paragarph obliterated]
But let ........................... [re]ceived yours the other day and also one for my father this morning. That part of your letter which relates to the Factory was certainly very unpleasant and I have in consequence advised my father to give up the Birmingham line of Railroad for this year and only attend to the Liverpool one- He is looking out for a sufficient man to take charge of the Factory and I hope he will be successful. I am requested by George Towsey the Borer that is going with me to inform his family at Sandyford that he is extremely well in good spirits and every attention is paid to his comfort and .........................

My father will also draw upon Herring Graham and Powles on my account at the rate of £300 per year-
I have not time to write any more. I must run off to the ship for she has already weighed anchor and the full sail is spread and a gentle breeze is fair for wafting us to yonder shore. God b[l]ess you all - I can write no more.
