16mm film, original master 'Isle of Man'

Filmed circa 1956 on the Isle of Man railway, a narrow-gauge railway. Footage of the Isle of Man railway coat of arms and flag, Manx cat walking on a brick wall, cleaning ash box of steam locomotive, locomotive No. 12, passenger steam train backing to platform, departing station, footage of the journey filmed from lineside, steam train passing through green landscape, manual operation of gate at road crossing, train at crossing, shunting of locomotive, shots of train passing through landscape, fields and sea coast, train pulled by Thornhill locomotive arrives at station, passengers getting off, railwaymen unloading goods and parcels from the luggage van at end of train, close up shots of locomotive No.6 and wagon, signals, shots of trains arriving at station filmed from the tracks, coupling locomotive to carriages, shunting locomotive No. 14 out of station. This is believed to correspond to the first film produced by John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse, prior to their contribution to the Railway Roundabout BBC programme. This is the original master film reel, colour, silent. Duration: 5 minutes 30 seconds.

This film is part of the Railway Roundabout collection donated by the makers of the programme, John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse. They produced films on contemporary British and foreign railways for the BBC Children's programme 'Railway Roundabout, broadcast monthly between 1958 and 1962 on BBC Television. The commentary was created and broadcast live, so the original films in the collection are silent. The Railway Roundabout collection includes the original masters, prints, some offcuts and working material for Railway Roundabout programmes as well as other films (non-Railway Roundabout) made by the John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse and a small number of films made by others. The collection also includes the original un-edited audio recordings made between 1960 and 1965 by John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse for the BBC radio programme Railway Roundup. Additionally, John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse were both photographers, their respective photographic collections are held by the National Railway Museum. No title frame. This film is titled 'Isle of Man' on Railway Roundabout 16mm masters list. Not found on BBC Programme Index. Made in 1956, this film is the first commercial film collaboration between John Adams and Patrick Whitehouse, which would led them to later contribute to the BBC's Railway Roundabout programme, after their film was seen by BBC Children's programme producer, Peggy Bacon.
