Painting, oil on canvas, The Night Mail; The Enginemen, by Sir William Orpen, RA, 1924. Depicts the footplate of a London, Midland and Scottish Railway locomotive, seen from the side. A fireman leans over, shovel in hand, lit by the glow from the unseen firebox. In front of him is the engine driver. He is an older man, leaning on the side of the cab and looking straight ahead. Smoke drifts across the front of the cab. Signed by the artist at bottom right. Original artwork for an LMS poster, one of a series which featured artworks by members of the Royal Academy. Framed, unglazed.
