Rotative compound beam engine built by Messrs. J & E Hall, Dartford, c.1838 with driving motor
This engine was built for the Boxmoor Ironworks of J Davis & Bailey, agricultural engineers, of Marlowes near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. It is an early and significant example of the 'compound' steam engine designed by Arthur Woolf in London in 1804. It had two cylinders, with steam being used in the first and then having expanded in the second, before being condensed back to water in the engine's condenser. This turned as much of the steam's heat energy into kinetic energy as possible, making the engine more efficieint than earlier designs. Compound operation became a mainstay of steam engine design thereafter.

Metal disc component with a central hole, this has a screw thread on. There is evidence of heavy use. Around the plate there are four metal bolts/ screws, with washers.
