The laying of the first successful Atlantic telegraph cable in 1866 was one of the nineteenth century’s more spectacular achievements. This contemporary album contains 11 photographs of the paying-out machinery installed on the steamship ‘Great Eastern’. It complements numerous other items relating to John Scott Russell and Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the Science Museum’s collections, including a commemorative album of documents relating to the Atlantic cable, and contemporary lithographs and models of the ‘Great Eastern’ and its paddle engines.
