Microphotograph salt print entitled 'Pou de l'abeille domestique grossiment 300 diametres', by Auguste Adolphe Bertsch, c. 1857. Salt print. Lice of the honey bee magnified 300 times

In the 1850s, keen photographer Auguste Adolphe Bertsch pioneered use of the microscope to take pictures of tiny creatures. While the beautiful images impressed amateur photographers, scientists were not yet convinced. Photography was still not good enough to improve on looking at something directly through a microscope.
