Horizontal single-cylinder four-stroke cycle gas engine made by Crossley Brothers Ltd, Manchester, 1886. Serial number 15040. Slide valve, flame ignition, speed 160 rpm, power output 4 horsepower.

This engine was used in a foundry in Edinburgh.

This was the first type of internal-combustion engine to work on Otto's four-stroke principle, patented in 1876, and is thus the direct ancestor of present-day piston internal-combustion engines.
