Square-base linecasting machine, made by the Linotype Company Ltd, Manchester, c.1892.
More
This is a model 1 Linotype linecasting machine. Arranging letters by hand into words and sentences to print a newspaper was a very slow process.
The Linotype machine, which could do this job automatically, revolutionised publishing. This Manchester-made machine was the first manufactured in Britain.
Skilled operators used the Linotype's keyboard to type out the text. Then the machine put the letters together into a mould, creating a line of type called a slug.
Linotype were initially based at 11 Hulme Street, Oxford Street Manchester. In 1899 they opened a new factory at Broadheath, Altrincham.
