Mr. Abbott was the inventor of the 'Simplex' reversing gearbox, and founder with his father John Abbott of The Motor Rail & Tramcar Co. which made Simplex locomotives, petrol-driven double-ended locomotives, usually narrow gauge, employing the gearbox. The papers consist of 18 'exhibits' - brochures, photographs, cuttings and notes illustrating Simplex locomotives along with explanatory notes by John Dixon Abbott. There is particular emphasis on the role of Simplexes in WW1. There is also a history of the firm
