Watch movement by Thomas Tompion, London, c.1692. Movement with verge escapement, a train of four wheels and tulip pillars. Signed on the backplate ‘T. Tompion London 0598’. Presented to the museum of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers by Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy in 1849.

Tompion began numbering his watches c.1680 onwards, although his early numbering system was convoluted. A '0' before 598 in fact meant number 1598, placing this watch movement to around the year 1692.
