Eurovision Television Network Map

Map of Europe showing Eurovision television transmission network. Made in Brussels, Belgium in 1961.

After the Second World War, discussions were held between several European countries on working together to establish a shared television network across the continent. This network would allow for expertise, technology, costs, and programmes to be shared across national boundaries. The European Broadcasting Union was founded on the 13th of February 1950 to help administer this network. This map shows the progress made by 1961, with network connections across different countries and broadcasters, with more being planned for the future. In 1956 the first edition of The Eurovision Song Contest was held on this network, a programme that for many would become the flagship programme of The Eurovision Television Network.
