Settle station is located at the southern end of the Settle and Carlisle Railway. The railway was built by the Midland Railway and opened in stages between 1875 and 1876. The railway was built to provide access for the company's trains to Scotland. Prior to construction of the railway, the company relied upon unsatisfactory agreements with the London and North Western Railway to allow onward travel of its passengers beyond Ingleton where the two companies' railways met. The railway was challenging to build and included construction of several major viaducts and tunnels. The summit of the railway at Ais Gill is the highest point on a railway in England.
