Collection of 166 original working drawings on cartridge paper, some with water colour wash, (1825-1869) showing the evolution of the locomotive by Robert Stephenson & Co. Ltd. during the working lifetime of Robert Stephenson. These drawings were preserved by the firm as the core of their historic collection, and transferred to the Science Museum in 1924. They were treated as separate from the firm's historic business records. Locomotives depicted include Locomotion, Rocket, Invicta, Planet etc. Companies include the Liverpool & Manchester, Stockton & Darlington, Mohawk & Hudson, Nurmeburg Furth, South Carolina, Marseilles-Avignon, London & North Western and Great Western Railways. Itemised list of the drawings available. NB - a few drawings were removed from the collection at various times. Some of these came to the Science Museum but were accessioned separately.
