'Multiped' Pedometer, 1982-84

Pedometer to be worn on the ankle and made in the form of a wristwatch: the case chromium plated metal. Leather strap with chrome buckle. Blued steel hand. The card dial, inscribed MILES and W. GERMANY is marked with four different coloured scales for four different pace lengths. Curved lines project the mileage figures from the outside scales to the inside scales. The hand is zeroed by means of a projecting reset wheel. Late 20th century. 42mm dia. Maker unknown.

Pedometer in nickel-plated case. Blued steel hands. White enamel dial marked on the circumference to 1760 yards. Two subsidiary dials record 1-10 miles and 10 to 100 miles. An inset brass totalizer dial is stamped 0 to 9. The case glazed to the back. Reset button within the oval bow. The movement steel and brass, with elaborate stamped scroll decoration to the backplate. Snail pace adjustment. The polished weight stamped 15676 BREVETE DRGM SGDG 100237 with a Swiss heraldic cross. Beneath are the letters HC for Henri Chatelain, France and a representation of a pedometer or map wheel. Early 20th cent. 46mm dia.

Pedometer and compass in a gilt metal case. The pedometer with two gilt metal hands and enamel dial. The outer ring marked to 100, the subsidiary dial marked from 1 – 12 miles. Signed “FRASER BOND STREET LONDON”. The compass with silvered dial and steel pointer. C. 1780. 56mm dia.

Pedometer in the form of a pocket watch. Brass case with stirrup pendant, deep movement with turned pillars. Engraved silver dial signed round the circumference “Le Maire fils AParis”. Four blued steel hands, the outer ring marked “Nombre” and engraved from 0 to 9, the next numbered from 0 to 9 and inscribed “Dizenne”, the next similarly numbered and marked “Centaine” and the last similarly numbered and marked “Mille”. Mid-18th century. 59mm dia.

Very small pedometer in a gold case. Blued steel hands. The white enamel dial marked from 1 – 10 around the circumference, with a subsidiary dial recording up to 50. The inside back of the case stamped “K 14”, “6” and three indistinct further numbers. Screw pace adjustment. Indistinctly stamped on the bow, which has a facetted gilt-metal split ring. C. 1900. 22mm dia. Maker unknown.

Pedometer with silver-plated case, glazed back and front. Belt clip stamped “16 Z”. Blued steel hands. The enamel dial recording up to 10 on the outer ring, with one subsidiary dials recording up to 100. The movement silver-plated and skeletonised. Screw pace adjustment. The weight stamped with the monogram PVP. Early 20th century. 45.5mm dia. Made by PVP.

Gilt metal pedometer and aneroid barometer combination. The white enamel pedometer dial with hair crack marked I to XII in Roman numerals. Blued steel hand. The barometer dial silvered, with a fine blued steel hand and signed “T B Winter Grey Street Newcastle on Tyne”. The case edges knurled for barometer adjustment. Contained in a blue velvet lined brown leather case. c.1900. 50mm dia. Case: 62mm dia. Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Cream painted dial numbered 0 to 90, with three subsidiaries marked 100, 1000, and 10,000 and bearing a trade mark: a swallow flying over the sun. Said to be Russian. Late 20th century. Pocket clip at base of setting stem. 44mm dia. Maker unknown.

Pedometer in silver-plated case with glazed back. Gothic, counter-balanced blued steel hands. White enamel dial numbered from 1 – 10,000, the two subsidiary dials being numbered 10 – 100 and 10 – 100,000. Steel movement with blued screws, the weight and the back-plate being lightly patterned. Apparently no pace adjustment. 45.5mm dia. C. 1900. Presently contained in an earlier patterned maroon leatherette shaped box, labelled on the underside A STRAUSS AINE 24 RUE DE LA CATHEDRALE LIEGE. OPTICIEN BREVETE. 73mm x 59mm. Maker unknown.

1895-1905

Pedometer in nickel-plated, perhaps contrasting brass and nickel-plated case. Glazed back. Small compass fitted to the crown. Blued steel hands. White enamel dial recording 1760 yards on the outer dial up to ten miles on one subsidiary dial and up to 100 on the other. A third subsidiary, above a projecting wheel, acts as a map wheel. A projecting lever at the top left of the dial zeros the hands. The steel and brass movement has pace adjustment and light ‘snailing’ on the steel backplate. The polished steel weight is stamped with HC and the map wheel trademark of Henri Chatelain, together with the numbers 15676 and 100237. C. 1910. 46.5mm dia.
