One magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tape, Sir William Stanier FRS, interviewed by Mr I. MacNichol, recorded at the interviewee’s home (‘Newburn’, Rickmansworth), in April-May 1965. A note on the case states that ‘At time of recording, Stanier was suffering the after effect of a stroke, his speech is very heavily slurred’.

One magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tape, copy of interview with Tom Bray possibly recorded on 12 May 1961 and which may have been broadcast and made for a BBC radio programme. The first segment on the audio tape is a recording made on board a motive power instruction train, with the interviewer talking to John Hughes, instructor who trains diesel train drivers (including for steam train driver). It is followed by several takes of the interview with Tom Bray recollecting his memory of being the fireman on Mallard on the day of its record-breaking run in 1938, with questions prompted by the interviewer. 7 inch audio reel, recorded at 7 ½ ips

This is the extract of the programme covering the opening of the National Railway Museum in York. 7 inch audio reel, recorded at 7 ½ ips This is a complementary copy supplied by BBC Radio London to the NRM as the museum was the topic of the programme, it is likely that it contains interviews of people involved with the museum at the time.

Five magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tapes recorded on 16 and 17 November 1976 or 1982 at a conference for railway engineers. The tapes are numbered from 1 to 5. According to the notes inside the tapes’ cases, each tape corresponds to the recording of a session of the conference, with main speakers and questions from attendance, with a total of about 90 male participants throughout all sessions. The sessions were likely led by Dr Saunders. Several of these participants have been identified as British Railways workers who worked all or a part of their career in York or Yorkshire area. Robert Riddles, aged 90, talks about his railway engineering career, including being Sir William Stanier’s Principal Assistant when working for the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and being the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) for British Railways after the Nationalisation. They are two original session tapes (tapes 1 of 2 and 2 of 2) and one edited master tape (made on 07/02/1983). Session tapes, 7 inch reels, mono, ½ track, recorded at 3 ¾ ips. 6 magnetic 1/4" audio tapes, BBC engineering copies of recordings made at Shildon during Rail 150 celebration and cavalcade, on 31/08/1975 by BBC Radio Cleveland (renamed BBC Tees in 2007). The tapes are not a complete set. Five tapes cover the commentary (by commentators: Mike Hollingworch, Graeme Aldons, and in background, public address by Alan Pegler), effects and base recordings. One tape is a copy of the BBC Radio Cleveland broadcast of the opening of the Timothy Hackworth Museum by H. M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 17/07/1975 (commentator: Mike Hollingworth).

However, digitisation of tape revealed that the tape only contains a test recording with the person recording reciting 'mary had a little lamb' followed by dogs barking. One magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tape, oral history interview with John Baldwin, conducted and recorded by David Mosley on 23 July 1986. Duration: 29 minutes. John Baldwin served on ambulance trains during the Second World War. He worked in the steel industry before the railways. His first posting was to Southampton where the train worked in conjunction with five hospital ships. He gives details about the London, Midland and Scottish railway carriages used to transport patients. He describes some of the lines he travelled, and what happened to the carriages at the end of the war. This suggests that the tape contains songs interpreted by participants to the British Rail Youth Training Scheme. The tape was recorded by Blue Strike recorders in Harrogate on 26 November 1987 and engineered by Will Jackson. It is a stereo recording, 15 ips, NAB, non Dolby.

One magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tape, oral history interview with representatives of Woking Homes, railway orphanage and old people home, Mr Max Millard (Chairman), Mr Jack Trucker (Vice Chairman) and Mrs Mavis Champion (Principal), conducted and recorded by Helen Ashby on 24 October 1988. Duration: 29 minutes. The interview outlines the history of the homes from 1885 when they were established and only accepted girls, through to the time boys and old people were accepted. From the 1980s most of the residents are old people. Interviewees also give details of fundraising and management structure. Two magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tapes, copies of British Railways Board training material 'Station Master Thinks Again' made in 1982. Both copies marked 'S.M. Thinks Again' on case, both are 3 inch reel, recorded at 3 3/4 ips. One copy is marked 'Copy No.4', the other copy is inside a case marked 'Jack Brown lad porter' on side and the same mention crossed over on the back of the case.

Three magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tapes, copies of 'Safety on 25kV AC Electrified Lines: Traffic & Maintenance Staff' thought to have been made by British Transport Films as training material for British Railways staff in the 1970s-80s. On their cases, two copies are marked '10', one is marked '13'. They are pulsed copies, made to be used in conjunction with a slide projector. This audio production would have been shown with slides.

One magnetic reel-to-reel 1/4" audio tape, oral history interview with Mr H. Cox, conducted and recorded by David Jenkinson in Settle, followed by oral history interview with Mr W. Fleming, conducted and recorded with David Jenkinson in Carlisle. Both interviews were recorded on the same tape on 25 February 1976. Mr H. Cox, aged 83, talks about being a stonemason on the Settle-Carlisle railway line between 1902 and 1913. Mr W. Fleming talks about his role as an engine driver on the Settle-Carlisle line, for Midland Railway (MR), London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and British Railways (BR) from 1915 to 1966. Original master recording, 7 inch reel, mono, 1/2 track, recorded at 3 3/4 ips. Original recording equipment: Tandberg Model 11 portable tape deck, ARG D202 microphone.
