The photograph was taken during an expedition organised by Arthur Eddington in Brazil. In 1919 British astronomer Arthur Eddington organised two expeditions to view an eclipse and test Einstein's theory of relativity. This image of the solar corona provided the first observational evidence, with the horizontal lines showing where stars, usually behind the Sun, have become visible.
