Watch by John Smeaton, York, 1645-1650. Faceted rock crystal case, set in a finely engraved gilt-metal frame. Gilt-metal dial engraved with an angel with outstretched wings, foliage, rabbits and squirrels, and a lakeside scene to the centre. Silver chapter ring and blued steel hand. Fusee movement with verge escapement, a train of three wheels, worm and wheel set-up and screwed on cock. Clockmakers' Museum No. 1512

Pair-cased watch by Jeremy Gregory, c. 1670. Outer case covered with leather and studded with gold, the inner made of rock-crystal with gilt mounts. Silver dial with decoratively engraved centre and single hand. Movement with verge escapement, tulip pillars and worm-and-wheel set-up regulator. Signed on the backplate ‘Jeremie Gregory att the Royal Exchange’. Clockmakers' Museum No. 38

Very small pedometer in a gold case. Blued steel hands. The white enamel dial marked from 1 – 10 around the circumference, with a subsidiary dial recording up to 50. The inside back of the case stamped “K 14”, “6” and three indistinct further numbers. Screw pace adjustment. Indistinctly stamped on the bow, which has a facetted gilt-metal split ring. C. 1900. 22mm dia. Maker unknown.

Pedometer in a silver case, glazed back and front. Blued steel hand. White enamel dial numbered from I to XII. Gilt and blued steel movement hinged to open from the front. Screw pace adjustment. Hallmark probably London 1872. 42mm dia. Maker unknown. c. 1910

Pedometer in a silver case

Pedometer with engine turned silver case. The back centrally engraved with a crest (a gryphon’s head erased) and the initials PHH. Blued steel hand with pierced counter-balance. The white enamel dial with black numerals I – XII over a very pale grey chapter ring. The dial centre with and eight-pointed star painted in blue, its points separating eight tiny flowers with gilt petals. Gilt and blued steel movement, frosted plates. The case numbered 1105 but not hallmarked. Late 19th century. 45.5mm dia. Maker unknown.
